Student benefits

Full-time studies are required from students who apply for student benefits. A full-time student is entitled to one free meal on school days.

Student financial aid

The staff at the Student Affairs Office helps students in matters concerning financial support. All Finnish students can apply for a student loan, student financial aid and the housing supplement. The student financial aid is applied for by a form that is available at the Student Affairs Office. The Student Affairs Office reports irregular studying or absences longer than two weeks to the student financial aid office of the Social Insurance Institution (Kela).

Persons coming to Finland for the purpose of studying only are not permanent residents in Finland. Thus they are not entitled to government-funded social benefits (such as student’s financial aid).

More information: Social Insurance Institution of Finland www.kela.fi

Transport support

Students of vocational schools can receive support for their daily transport to school and back, if the length and costs of the journeys exceed the limits decreed by law. The application forms are available at the Student Affairs Office and the Social Insurance Institution (Kela). The student fills in the application form and possible purchase certificate and returns them to the Student Affairs Office. The transport support can be granted for the month preceding the returning of the application at the earliest. The transport support info handout and the necessary application forms are available at the Student Affairs Office.

Passport, visa and insurance for the placement periods
The student ought to have a valid passport when travelling to countries other than the Nordic countries. A visa is not needed in travelling to countries of the EU or EEC.

The school’s accident insurance covers the health care costs for accidental injuries occurring in the work place or on the way from home to work place and back. The student is responsible for obtaining a sufficient leisure time insurance and travel insurance and also for getting the European Health Insurance card from the Finnish Social Insurance Institution. The card entitles its holder to medically necessary health care while staying in another country of the EU, EEC or in Switzerland. Each country provides health care services according to their own legislation and health care system. The card can be obtained from Social Insurance Institution offices and is granted to all persons who are entitled to Finnish social security. The card is free of charge.
The passport, visa, insurances, social security and travel arrangements will be discussed in more detail in the International Affairs tutoring lessons and in the training sessions for students going abroad.

IT info

E-mail addresses and information security

E-mail addresses and login instructions are given to the new students at the beginning of the school year. The students have the opportunity to read and send e-mail in the computer lab 402. The Systems Specialist gives instructions on the information security measures in use at the school, helps in computer problems and in changing passwords. It is recommended that students use their school e-mail account for study-related matters, in order to ease the communications between teachers and students. The Systems Specialist Tutteli Ulmanen’s room is on the fifth floor.

Users of the school e-mail and intranet must observe the regulations concerning personal data, criminal records and copyrights. Actions for damages are brought against persons who break these regulations. The general rules of usage apply to e-mail and intranet user names and the use, loading or instalment of the student’s own programmes on the school computers.

General IT guide

The e-mail and intranet user names are personal. The user must make sure that nobody else can use his/her user ID.

Giving false personal data or false information concerning organisations will cause the user to lose his/her user rights for a specified time. Spreading computer viruses, chain letters etc. is absolutely forbidden.

Only programmes bought and used by the school can be used on the school PC’s. The use of own programmes (such as games, chat programmes etc.) is forbidden. Also the loading and instalment of such programmes on the school PC’s is forbidden. Copying programmes and software from the PC’s or from the web is forbidden and considered a theft. If found, such an action may be reported as a criminal offence to the police.

Misuse of the system will immediately lead to a loss of user rights and, if the situation so requires, other measures. Users must report found defects or broken equipment either to the teacher or to the IT support. If the user causes damages, he/she must pay for all the repair costs.

In addition to the above, users must also observe laws on the usage of information technology (concerning personal records, criminal records and copyrights) and the possible claims for damages ensuing from malpractices. Serious offences are given over to the officials for investigation. In cases of misuse or malfunction, the persons responsible for operating the system have the right to investigate user’s files and contacts.
