Vocational skills demonstrations

Vocational skills demonstrations are a part of the student's assessment and of the education as defined in the curriculum. The vocational skills demonstrations evaluate the students' vocational skills in genuine work situations and are planned, carried out and assessed by the education provider and the working life.

The vocational skills demonstration is a selection of work tasks which measures the student's knowledge and skills. With the help of the skills demonstrations the student demonstrates how well she/he has reached the main goals of the vocational studies and the professional skills required in the working life. The skills demonstrations are a part of on-the-job learning. The vocational skills demonstrations take place mainly in connection with the on-the-job learning periods, either in external partner companies, at the teaching restaurant Perho, or at Perhon Herkku.

The skills demonstrations are taken for each study unit and they are based on national skills demonstration materials as well as on demonstration tasks planned by the educational institution, covering the most important skill areas of the study unit in question. The demonstration task is planned in advance together by the student, workplace supervisor and the supervising teacher. Before the skills demonstration the student must have a sufficient amount of time and opportunities to practise the tasks involved in the vocational skills demonstration.

The participants to the assessment of the skills demonstration:

  • on-the-job learner (self-assessment)
  • workplace instructor
  • supervising teacher (responsible for giving the final grade)
  • Assessment of the skills demonstration is based on national assessment criteria for skills demonstrations

Assessment targets are only those mentioned in the assessment criteria

In the skills demonstration assessment discussion the participants review how the student has succeeded in the demonstration, and compare his/her performance with the goals set for the work and with the national assessment criteria.

Actuator

The education provider appoints, for a fixed period of time, an actuator for planning and implementing the vocational skills demonstrations.

the members of the actuator are representatives of employers, employees, the education provider, the teachers and the students.

the tasks of the actuator include, for example, the approval of the implementation plans of the vocational skills demonstrations and their assessment, the appointment of the assessors of the skills demonstrations, and the processing of correction requests concerning skills demonstrations.

Vocational skills demonstration certificate

A certificate is written of the skills demonstrations and it is signed by the chairperson of the actuator appointed by the education provider.

The degree-specific part of the curriculum defines how much the grade of the skills demonstration affects the grade of the whole study unit.
